In 2025 reverse mortgage help paying property taxes is available. This is only for current reverse mortgage borrowers.
The federal funded Housing Finance Agency program, ReMIT or Reverse Mortgage Insurance and Tax payment program, is available for reverse mortgage borrowers who may be facing reverse mortgage foreclosure due to non-payment of property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, condominium homeowner’s association fees and other property charges,
The program isn’t just available for the California reverse mortgage, it’s a resource for all reverse mortgages nationwide.
To be eligible for this program, an original reverse mortgage borrower (who is both on the reverse mortgage loan and the title to the property at the reverse mortgage inception date), must have been issued a legal notice that they are in default, due to failure to pay one of the property charges listed above. The borrower and reverse mortgage lender must have already entered into an agreement to pay the past due balances, but has demonstrated difficulty in keeping with the agreed upon payments.
Other qualifications are that the original borrower (s) must still reside in the property as their owner – occupied property, have an annual income of less than $70.540, be “at risk” of foreclosure due to the unpaid property charges and must demonstrate the ability to sustain future payment of property taxes, insurance, and condominium/HOA fees as required.
Even if you do not meet all these qualifiers, contact the program administrator to see if there’s any flexibility in the guidelines, it doesn’t hurt to try!
